Project Name: Box Co: Next Day Delivery
Project Type: Game Jam (48 hours)
Daniel Scott-Wilson and I took part in the two day game jam called "Mix and Game Jam". The theme was "mixing genres".
We decided on the genres first-person and tower defense.
My Responsibilities: Design and Art
As Daniel Scott-Wilson, my partner for this jam, could handle all of the blueprinting in the short space of time, it was my duty to quickly
design the level
, the
core mechanics
, and the relevant schemas that could be achieved in such a short time frame. Then I got to work on modelling, assigning material values, and implementing various assets into the game.
Outcome: High Ratings and Learnt Lessons
After the 7 day voting period for the jam we
finished second for gameplay, and fourth for creativity.
As the designer of the game, this means a lot to me as it validates my efforts to have made as fun a game as I could in such a short amount of time, proving I can scope well both for myself, and with another person involved in the process as well.
The two main technical lessons that I have learned during this jam are the importance of smoothing groups in 3ds max, and how to assign material ids so we can speed up the texturing process by doing it all in Unreal Engine rather than unwrapping the models and using Photoshop to texture. I will be taking forward both of these skills into my future games, especially in my solo efforts as I prefer a low poly art style.
